Quality control (MD) & Moisture Profiling (CD)

The high flexibility of our infrared solutions allows an optimal quality control.

In machine direction (MD), it is possible to adjust the power per each pair of rows, in order to adjust the drying to the specific production requirements.

For grades with mottling tendencies, the power can be focused in the beginning of the drying arch for optimal fixation of the coating layer immediately after the coating head. For other grades, the energy can be distributed along the infrared dryer for gentle drying with optimal efficiency. In configurations after double side coating application, the energy can be distributed differently on each side of the web, to adjust the drying on each side to the corresponding coating application or to adjust the curl tendencies of the web.

In cross direction (CD), our profiling solutions provide accurate and continuous moisture CD control in order to improve paper quality and machine runnability. We have designed our system to include optimal cross-directional profile control.  The moisture profile can be corrected in zones of 37,5 – 75 or 150 mm with our electrical IR solution (DryMaster™).

The picture below shows an example of improvement of CD moisture without (left picture) and with CD moisture control. 2-Sigma is reduced by 65 % in this example.

Our gas-based solutions can also include moisture profiling capabilities in zones of 143 mm, which is very cost-effective for coarse profiling corrections as the solution can easily be integrated inside the main dryer for a small additional cost.

Our profiling systems are installed on all possible paper grades, ranging from tissue to heavy board applications and in different positions including in coating stations, after metering size press or in cylinder drying sections.

For specific wet edges, we supply the electrical EdgeMaster™ which allows drying of edges allowing often to increase the machine speed as the bottleneck is removed.

DryMaster™ with temperature control

This picture shows a DryMaster™ immediately after the coating head with TempArray temperature control.

The temperature measurement is used to provide direct feedback and adjust the local drying power in zones of 37,5 to 75 mm. This allows for adjusted drying rate in function of local cross-direction differences in coat application.

Imperfections in coating application can be compensated by adjusting the local drying rate and product quality deviations can be avoided by this advanced drying control.

Profiling with gas IR

This picture shows how coarse profiling is integrated inside a GemDryer™.

Based on feedback from the reel moisture zones are switched off or on in order to adjust the drying power in zones in order to improve the spread of the moisture profile on the pope.

The first 2 rows are at full power for coat drying and the last 4 rows are operating with CD moisture control feedback.

GemDryer with profiling

Gas profiler installed in drying section against drying cylinders

This example shows how our GemDryer® was designed to implement a gas IR profiler which is installed in very limited space against a drying cylinder. The goal of the project was to replace a water jet moisturizer for CD control which reached end of life.

Thanks to the installed solution, improved moisture profiles are reached with reduced maintenance compared to the old solution.

Drying the wet zones instead of remoisturizing the dry zones also results in an overall increase of drying capacity and possible speed increase.
